5.1 Colitis. Systemic absorption of clindamycin has been demonstrated following topical use. Diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and colitis (including pseudomembranous colitis) have been reported with the use of topical clindamycin.

Orally administered and injected clindamycin may cause severe colitis (inflammation of the colon). Vaginal formulations of clindamycin may be absorbed into the blood stream, and colitis with diarrhea or bloody diarrhea (including C.difficile colitis) have been reported with the use of clindamycin vaginal suppositories.

Clindamycin Phosphate Topical Solution, Clindamycin Phosphate Gel, and Clindamycin Phosphate Lotion are contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to preparations containing clindamycin or lincomycin, a history of regional enteritis or ulcerative colitis, or a history of antibiotic-associated colitis.
