The two of them committed a felony which could have killed him and he did nothing about it.
That is when the wheels fell off of this story.
They could have easily come down the hall and found him dead on the couch, drowned in his own vomit, then the autopsy toxicology report would have found the drugs and voila aggravated 1st degree murder (depravity).

I thought Dave was lucky to get off so easily with the police when the incident was first reported. I figured he'd probably be held in custody at least until the toxicology report came back indicating the use of date rape drugs. Just a minor quibble, though.
Otherwise, a nice ending. Good story overall. Idea for a sequel sounds good, depends on where you plan to take it.

So, I guess the cops in Benton never heard of a toxicology blood test? Nor has the DA ever heard of a trial based on good, compelling circumstantial evidence, which abounds in this instance? Apparently not. The disappearance of Jaz, Claude and Armond are similarly intertwined with Owen's trip to and from Indonesia. But hey, it's still a GREAT, well-written story. 5+++/5!!
