An ear polyp is a growth on the inside of your child's ear canal. Ear polyps may be caused by chronic ear infections or a cholesteatoma.
Naso-pharyngeal polyps (nasopharyngeal polyps, otopharyngeal polyps, inflammatory polyps, middle ear polyps) are the most common masses that are seen in the external ear canal in cats. They are benign growths that can be seen in the back of the cat s throat, the middle ear, and above the soft palate.
The exact cause of aural polyps is yet to be known. The most probable causes include foreign particles or irritants that arise from the ear canal or ear drum which causes the aural polyp. They appear as fleshy growths on the external surface of the ear. Sometimes, these polyps may also arise from the middle ear.
The polyp may be hidden behind the soft palate but in some cases it is apparent that there is something behind the soft palate pushing it forward. In cats with nasopharyngeal polyps growing out through the ear canal, the polyps may be visible on deep inspection of the ear canal and eardrum.
