Lay back down is the ONLY acceptable phrase for that context. Lie (down) is an intransitive verb, taking no direct object; past tense is lay. Lay (an egg) is a transitive verb, requiring a direct object; past tense is laid. (3) Lay (put down), as in You can lay down your coat here. Past tense laid: I laid my book aside for a moment.
