I do not think Federation will turn into anything more democratic soon. Except for Helene and maybe Jenna, all girls and John are all vigilantes. They take action when needed and play the judge, jury and executioner. There is only two Terran villians left alive at the moment and I do not think the crew of Invictus will wait for an indipendent court to decide for their guilt and punishment.
If John losses his power stemming from admirality, he will not be able to legally and morally claim he is doing the right thing.
If the federation turns into a true democracy what will happen to war effort? Lynette can turn things around quite sucessfully since she does not have to lobby for the changes she plans to make. I do not think any US senate will approve any request to absolve DARPHA. Another problem with an actual democracy can be the newly acquired Kintark worlds will rebel against Terran federation.
Trankarans were a kind of democracy at the beginning and the story arc concluded that this made them vulnarable in the conflict. When Nisekkara grab the power by becoming the Glowing Queen, the senate has no other choice than obeying her.
As Romans showed us in times of conflict it is better to have a Sezar at the helm.
So I believe this problem will be addressed after the progenitor war.
Maybe an existing villian can either confront the governers of the colonies or rise to power by manupulating them as their elected representative we will wait and see...
